Googlewhacking
ahem ahem!
finally, I do have something interesting to crib here...
you ever heard of the above term "Googlewhacking" ??
I bet very few!
Well, I wasnt in a mood of watching anything, matter of fact, I was exhausted after getting acclimatised to the environment of my college which just started a few days back. So, my dear friend Nishant got me to watch this amazin, mind-blowing 2 hour episode by a stand-up comedian (dats wht m told he is) Dave Gorman. He had this British accent which made me scratch my head literally. O Boy, these britishers speak as if they literally murmuring some alien language. Damn, his expressions, the ardor, the sheer dedication to talk non-stop for 2 continuous hours made me feel terrible! Believe me, I didnt fucking know people like him exist in this world. He is I.N.S.A.N.E to the core. Believe me. And if you still dont, you better get hold of his adventures and you would know what I am talking about. You just cant miss this. It is fuckin unbelievable.
Okay, getting back to describing the term...(courtesy wikipedia) " A 'Googlewhack' is a google search query consisting of two words, that returns a single result. Since 2003, British comedian Dave Gorman has toured Britain, France, Australia, Canada and the United States with a show entitled Dave Gorman's GoogleWhack Adventure, and published a book of the same name. These were based on a true story. While attempting to write a novel for his publisher (Random House) Dave became obsessed with Googlewhacks and travelled across the world finding people who had authored them. Although he never wrote his novel, he did eventually write a book about his "Googlewhack adventure" which went on to be a Sunday Times #1 best seller in the UK and has also been published in the U.S. and Canada. A translation is in the works for Japan. "
Well, what you really got to do is go to http://www.google.com/ , enter a query of two random words but without using quotation marks, no punctuations and no numbers. As simple as that. If google returns a single result out of some 3 million pages, then this is called as googlewhacking i.e. a single result in the whole world wide web. This happens because some people have mentioned the two words somewhere in their publications or writings on the web. Hence, they are said to be GoogleWhacks! And Yeahh, this is some kind of achievement i guess. Listening to Dave Gorman, definitely seemed so.
Googlewhacking is based and judged on some rules.
- Rule Number One: Your two Googlefactors must exist in Google's view of this dictionary. Not your view; Google's view! Google does the work, and Google has the final word! In the blue bar atop your Google results, accepted terms are linked, and so appear 'underlined.'
- Rule Number Two: Google also is the arbiter of a whack's uniqueness. Look to the right end of the blue bar atop your Google results. If you see "Results 1 - 1 of (any number),' you found exactly one hit = Googlewhack!
- Rule Number Three: Google shows you an excerpt of the page you whacked. Look at that text. If it's merely a list of words (such as a bibliography, concordance, encyclopedia, glossary, thesaurus, dictionary, domain names, or plain old machine-generated random garbage), No Whack For You! If your Googlefactors don't comply, some other whacker will certainly test them, then expose your treachery to all!
