2 mothers, 6 children placed in a Christian Institution in Jaffna

[TamilNet, Wednesday, 05 September 2007, 06:58 GMT]
Jaffna district Magistrate R. T. Vignarajah directed Tuesday Sri Lanka Army (SLA) Jaffna Commander Maj. Gen. G. A. Chandrasri and Jaffna district Police Commissioner to provide full protection to two mothers with three children each, placed in a Christian Home for Women and Children in Irupaalai. The two women with their husbands and children had sought protection with Human Rights Commission (HRC) Jaffna Monday due to death threats allegedly from SLA backed paramilitary armed men. They were produced in Jaffna Court Tuesday.

The magistrate directed the police to place the women and children in the State Approved Home attached to Irupaalai church as they could not be placed in the protective custody in Jaffna prison.

Altogether 14 civilians including two mothers and their six children sought protection for their lives at the HRC Jaffna office Monday.

The magistrate in his directive to the SLA and Police High Commands stressed that the two mothers and their children should be provided full protection.

The Home for Children and Women is administered jointly by local and Foreign Humanitarian Organizations.
