Biden: Democrats have lost faith in the American people

Assuming the quote is accurate.
Sen. Joe Biden said in an interview at the New Hampshire Union Leader this afternoon that too many Democrats, including the frontrunners for the presidential nomination, do not have faith in the American people.
“We’ve got to trust the American people more,” Biden said.
“I think they’ve really lost faith in the American people in terms of leveling with them,” he said of his leading rivals.
When he asks groups of Democrats if they think the American people are stupid because they elected George W. Bush twice, most respond that, yes, they do, he said. He said he thinks that attitude is a real problem for the Democrats, who fail to understand how smart and pragmatic the American people really are.
Biden was generally critical of the far left wing of his party and of the strategies the frontrunners are using to win the nomination.
It’s beyond just the left wing. The entire big government approach of concentrating power in the hands of the elites rather than allowing and encouraging power to decentralize out to states and local communities is a symptom of mistrust. It shows up throughout the government, from national educational standards that stifle local control and freedom, to tax policy, to the centralized approach to managing health care, to matters of national and especially self defense. The Democrats’ default attitude is to take power from the people rather than entrust power to the people. Biden is on to something in saying so.

He identifies the problem only in the context of what must be “fixed” to capture and retain more power from the huddled masses. We are just so smart, the Dems need better tricks to hhave us give up power to them!

He’s grasping at straws. It’s a backhanded plea to make himself sound like he gives a crap…which he doesn’t. His statement is very true but coming from him it’s laughable.
Pilgrim on November 9, 2007 at 7:40 AM
Fixed.
However, in this instance, I have to give the guy some credit for this moment of sanity.
James on November 9, 2007 at 7:42 AM
A Democrat accidentally told the truth? How soon can we expect to hear the “It was satire” defense?
Of course that’s their attitude-isn’t that what Socialists do?
ReubenJCogburn on November 9, 2007 at 7:44 AM
“Pull my fingers, America!!!!!!!”
The Libs think they are smarter than the rest of us and expect to lead us all, since we’re too stupid to know what we need. The Dems are far removed from the average American both in wealth and radical postmodernism ideals, and it’s starting to unravel.

Joe Biden becoming a populist? I wonder where he
gotstole that idea from. It really is quite disgusting how arrogant politicians who have no interest in the “common man” come out with statements like this. John Edwards is the worst but hardly the only one afflicted with Huey P. Long disease.Beyond that, I wonder if this is a sincere sentiment (that the left wing of his party is nuts). I find it hard to see Biden saying this stuff as anything other than a political tactic to get some distance between himself and the other “rats” that are falling over each other to appease La Raza, Code Pink, MoveOn, and all the other moonbats.
In any case Biden is a complete moron when it comes to international affairs and the Constitution. That hasn’t changed.

Greasy Joe is the Cybil of the dems. There is no way to nail him down to a philosophy. He either sounds like a right wing conservative or a willing tool for socialism.
If he did become president it would certainly be entertaining watching our enemies scratching their heads wondering what Joe was gonna do next. Nuke em, or embrace em.

Is it really mistrust, or something more sinister?

I’m confused….Biden said this? Really?
Why does it make sense?

We all know this is what the limo demo’s think, but to hear them say it is beyond belief.

Well, I lost faith in Democrats around 1977, so there.
I was only in the 8th grade at the time, but I realized then I was smarter than Joe Biden.

Oh this is so good, first we have Dodd saying the terrorist
is on the high moral ground, then who would quess that Liberals could pull to insults within 24hrs.Now Biden
says “Democrats have lost faith in the American people”.
Oh really, lets see I remember when the Liberals lost the election,Liberals and the media said,if I remember this
right,”that the American people had a collective voter temper tantrum, and the’ll realize they made a mistake”
Well the day is just starting,so will the Liberals pull off a trifecta.

Not only have they lost faith in Americans, they believe we are stupid, evil, incompetent etc.
roninacreage on November 9, 2007 at 8:39 AM
Less than a month ago, Smirkin’ Joe proclaimed Americans were stupid before they entered the public school system and blamed it on poor parenting in the minority community.
So Joe, according to you the parents are neglectful, and as a result their children are stupid, but YOU think the Democrats should stop thinking Americans are stupid.
Oh ye of little faith.
fogw on November 9, 2007 at 8:53 AM
he’s just now realizing this?
case in point - illegal immigration.
Americans want the issue resolved, not addressed in committee meetings. yet both sides of the aisle keep feeding us the “out of the shadows” and “can’t deport 12 million” lines as though there are no other alternatives.
that’s why so many municipalities have been passing their own ordinances and fighting back, like in NY over driver’s licenses.
listen up or be out of a job, pols.
madmonkphotog on November 9, 2007 at 8:58 AM
The Democrats are concerned with only thing . . . political power. Not one of the fools gives a rat’s backside about the “people”. The “people” are nothing but pawns in parlor game being played out by rich, narcissistic, power mongering leftists. Don’t let them get away with it, lest the great Republic we once knew will be no more.

How soon till the electadems start speaking with the imperial “we”?
William Teach on November 9, 2007 at 9:04 AM
This is considered a revelation. Which means there are a few who are seeing the light and eventually will realize the meaning of life does not include a ‘Nanny State”.
MSGTAS on November 9, 2007 at 9:05 AM
Is this suppose to explain why they think that the American people should no longer have any say in their government? Sounds to me like Joe is admitting that the Dems have gone from being closet socialists to full on power grabbing communists.
He might as well have come straight out and said…We democrats know that the American people are ignorant children who cannot be trusted and must be suppressed and oppressed for their own good.
doriangrey on November 9, 2007 at 9:05 AM
Well, I’m speechless. This shows incredible clarity - did he really say that? The Dems believe that the smartest people in the world are:
1. Hollywood actors
2. the Liberal Media
3. New Yorkers
4. Southern Californians
None of the rest of us have mattered to the Dems in ages and ages, except as how they might manipulate us. Their failure to properly manipulate us, resulting in the election of GWB twice, has been a matter of some confusion for them. Biden seems to have finally figured it out.
reine.de.tout on November 9, 2007 at 9:08 AM
I think their real disillusion came after getting kicked in the teeth over and over again by the American people rejecting their amnesty proposals.
doriangrey on November 9, 2007 at 9:12 AM
A rare moment of honesty from Biden by pointing out the obvious.
TheBigOldDog on November 9, 2007 at 9:12 AM
And so goes their brief moment of mental clarity for the decade, and possibly the century.

And tragically enough despite the obvious biting sarcasm of that statement, it’s probably more true than not.

Joe Biden is the one who thinks the American people are stupid. He has been exaggerating his background and credentials for over 30 years and figures that nobody will catch up with him. Recall that when he ran for president in 1987 for the 88 nomination, he stole a speech from British Labour leader Neil Kinnick in which Kinnick had stated: “Why is is that Neil Kinnick’s ancestors could work in the coal mines for 16 hours a day and then play football and why is Neil Kinnick the first Kinnick to go to college”. Incredibly, Biden stole Kinnick’s entire biography and inserted the name Biden for Kinnick when he stole the speech. Biden, when caught, attempted to say that his ancestors actually worked in the coal mines and then played football. Asked which family members worked in the coal mines, the best that Biden could do was say it was one member of his wife’s family and the guy worked in management! The guy never went under the ground to bring up coal. And Biden didn’t know that Neil Kinnick was talking about soccer, not American football. But since 1987, Biden has been able to get the MSM to say that Biden simply borrowed some words from another politician’s speech. So it is Biden who thinks everyone is a dummy.

If they trust the American people more, they won’t have but 6 or 8 seats in the house and senate.
They can’t trust the American people…
look what happens when we pass laws…they take it to court.
When we elect a president…they take it to court.
When we arrest illegals…they take it to court.
When we try to find terrorists…they take it to court.
When a school corrects a bunch of hoodlums…they take it to court
They can’t trust us, they would be conservatives.

I disagree with Biden on many issues but I admire straight talk like this from a politician. Still, it’s so out of the ordinary I can’t help but distrust his motives for saying it.

Then remind me why we employ this batch at all…

I remember Biden and that incident. But, I too worry the baseline good judgment of the public is deteriorating. This country seems to be growing more deadheads than sharpies. The deadheads are breeding like rats, and the sharpies are not. The welfare state and open borders are not helping either.
saiga on November 9, 2007 at 10:23 AM
Wait, wait, wait. We have government for the people and by the people. Our leaders don’t need to have faith in us. They just have to do how ever we vote them to do. That’s their job. That’s why we voted them in to the office to begin with, because we had faith in them. Our government has been hijacked. They don’t care about what “we the people” that elected them (ie. their bosses) want. They just go on trying to satisfy their little special interest groups like moveon.org, pushing for illegal immigrant rights, and actively destroying anything and everything our founding fathers wanted in our country and constitution. I think it’s about time we started to stand up for ourselves. We’re supposed to be their boss, how about we start with some reprimands and maybe even some firings.
Tuari on November 9, 2007 at 10:37 AM
Although one could reasonably ask, if their faith is waning, why they continue to be employed.
No. That would make us a democracy, which we’re not. We’re a constitutional republic, and the constitution defines the limits of their authority (or it should), not us.
Of course, there’s always the amendment process, but that’s a high hurdle…and with good reason :-)

I’m having a hard time believing he said that whole thing… If he did, I don’t believe he meant it.
The dhimms have lost me forever as a supporter. I shouldn’t say forever, but I can’t see them changing at all except for the worse, they just keep sinking to new lows on a constant basis. The Republicans have their problems, but at least they (for the most part) stand up for this country and it’s people.

And will he be proven right about this time, next year! I still believe in the American people, and thus in America. Yes, some of you, call me naive.
Time to wake up America, before we’re on the way to Europe or Venezuela, and then to scarf-claden hairdressers and no more Christmas decorations. You still are the beakon of the free world - find a way to pierce your light through the dung, no matter its source.

Entelechy
You meant beacon, not beakon (you were picturing the jihadi hairdresser, perhaps?) I think.
profitsbeard on November 9, 2007 at 11:16 AM
profitsbeard, beacon, of course. Those damned foreigners…no, no excuses. I own it! I’m accountable, because I’m not a liberal :)
I love your comments profitsbeard, and can picture that vast library of yours. It shines through, like a beacon.
p.s. It wasn’t the hairdresser, it was all that Russian we had to take.

Hell what Biden said applies to Republicans too. Time for a third party.
MB4 on November 9, 2007 at 11:52 AM
MB4, I actually agree with you but it couldn’t be Paul, Kucinich or any weak yokel.
Maybe you want to run :)
Entelechy on November 9, 2007 at 12:00 PM
So they bring it back over and over ’til we give up from fatigue- like the EU “Constitution” which is even now being stealthily rammed down the throats of the people who overwhelmingly voted against it…or the people of NJ, who turned down a bond issue for stem cell research, because they “didn’t really understand it,” or the people of Oregon, who turned down a tax on cigs. to fund gov’t health care for middle-class kids-they didn’t get it either. Our politicians, particularly Dems, but not exclusively, despise the people.
JiangxiDad on November 9, 2007 at 12:09 PM
Well, you can’t fix a problem until you recognize it as one.
The lack of trust is certainly mutual, considering the current amazingly low approval ratings of the President and the Congress. Those ratings represent growing dissatisfaction from virtually everywhere in the political spectrum. Frankly, I don’t trust the few who poll as being satisfied. Quite sadly, I fear things must get a whole lot worse before we’ll see improvement.
EconomicNeocon on November 9, 2007 at 12:27 PM
I think this has more to do with the lust for power on the part of the federal government hacks and not trust. Congressmen want power concentrated in Washington because then they can help wield it. Not so much about trust but about lust for power and greed.

Helloyawl on November 9, 2007 at 2:38 PM
Yeah, that describes the Democrats. But the Democrats aren’t the only ones whom it describes. Concentrating power is precisely what the Republicans were doing for the twelve years they were in office — and it’s what they’ll do again if they return to office.
As George Will says, the American people are philosophically conservative but operationally liberal. We like Big Government, and it shows.
