POPSHere today, gone tomorrow I've been reading about the fall shad migration for years. I use to think the shad did like birds in that they migrated to an area in the fall and stayed there until cold weather forced them back out into deep water. What I've been seeing the last few years is that the movement is on a daily bases. The top picture was taken last Sunday half way back in a creek. There was a ton of shad and lots of active fish. I marked some of the bass. I went back in there the next Tuesday and took the bottom picture. I circled a reference point in both pictures. I was just a little farther along in the lower picture. That was all I saw and not worth stopping for. I went to the back of the creek and out into the mouth and never found the shad. I'm not sure if what I'm seeing on our lake occures on lowland lakes too?

POPSSunday I was a novice at drop shotting. I guess Tuesday I became an expert! lol I went back to the same creek where I had caught 50 fish Sunday and 95% of the shad had moved out. I looked up and down for them and even out in the mouth of the creek and nothing. I'll post a comparison picture and a question later. Anyway I check out three other creeks and found nothing but the fourth was loaded. The only problem was the bass were not very active. I was working myself to death to get one to take a spoon. I usually move when that happens but I decided to try a drop shot again. Honestly the upper left picture was my first drop. Look at how I expertly and pains takingly worked the worm to get that fish to bite! lol I didn't have a clue what I'm doing other than putting the worm in their face. I caught 34 fish in about three hours with four being largemouths and the rest spots. Again none was over 16" but one largemouth and a spot were close. That's one lazy way to fish! lol I just dropped the bait and might move it

POPSThe nature of vertical sonar is that you get a distorted picture of what's really there. Balls of bait really are balls when they're small and left alone. One of these days when I'm really bored I'd like to suspend a big trash container in the water and run over it from different angles with both types of sonars.

POPSComparing a HB 997 sonar to a Lowrance X125 while idling I kept both my units on and the top two pictures are the same as are the bottom two. Of course the Humminbird screen is bigger so you have more history. You can also see some sonar interference on the Lowrance that comes from the Humminbird. I marked the same fish on both pictures. You can also see the bubbles in both pictures espcially the top ones. The bottom line is the color and the wide screen are very nice and easy on the eyes but hardly something you have to have.

POPSA smorgasbord! lol Remember I have huge feet and hands! lol My fish never look as big in pictures as some people's. I guess it's the locker room syndrome! lol Anyway, I took these to send to a friend. You just can't beat a good school of white bass on our lake! I always catch one or two a day like the upper right. I don't count tham except if I'm competing against my friend Yank because he's a liar! lol That was a nice crappie but I got a bad angle for the picture. That spot was about 14". I tried to show what the fish would look like on the LCR but they don't want to stay under the transducer so it's hard to say which one you caught.

POPSSome pictures The top two pictures on the left show that indeed "simples minds are easily fascinated"! lol I finally caught one in the left picture. I took the middle top picture because a friend came by and I told him I would show him what I was stuck fishing for. You can see some interference lines from his depth finder. I finally found some shad in the upper right picture but when they are up off the bootm like that I have trouble catching anything. You can see how those shad are reacting to the bass just below them. Good luck trying to catch those fish! lol The bottom pictures where taken off that school of shad in the lower post. I didn't catch one in the left picture. I really didn't think I'd catch one on the middle picture but finally did. The lower right picture shows how many times I had to jig my spoon to get a bite. Tuesday they would hit it right away. Notice the depth reading. The fish I caught was followed by so many others that my depth finder thought they were the bottom! l

POPSYesterday morning about 9:00 I went right back to where I had all the success last Tuesday afternoon about 2:00 and most of the shad had moved farther back in the creek where they had been Tuesday afternoon and were concentrated in a huge school. The bottom right is a continuation of the bluff in the picture in the post below. Look at how the bass cause the school of shad to take on such an odd shape. There's also a lot of scattered bass and a nice school to the right of the shad where the creek channel widens. The fishing was good but not as great as last Tuesday.

POPSShad movements in a day Yesterday morning about 9:00 I went right back to where I had all the success last Tuesday afternoon. The shad were farther out in the creek and more scattered. There were some bass scattered around too but nothing much going on. I caught a couple and snagged a couple more but it wasn't worth the effort. I left these with the idea of coming back later. That arrow points to what I guess is a long school of unmolested shad in the creek channel. The sonar makes it appear that there fish and shad everwhere but it's a compressed picture and a little misleading. I'm still trying the different transducer beams to see what I like. I might even just start cutting the sonar off.
