Couple shot, injured in Batticaloa

[TamilNet, Sunday, 02 September 2007, 12:59 GMT]
Unidentified armed men, alleged to be from Karuna group, shot and injured a farmer and his wife Saturday around 7:45 p.m, in an attempt to abduct the farmer from his house at Kannangkudaa area in Batticaloa district, sources in Batticaloa said.

Kannangkudaa area was earlier under the control of Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) and is currently under the occupation of the Sri Lanka Army (SLA).

Sivanathan Jayaseelan and his wife Visu Jayaseelan are the persons injured in the shooting.

The gunmen had tried to take away Jayaseelan for interrogation and had shot at the couple when Jayaseelan argued with the gunmen, Batticaloa police said.

Jayaseelan, seriously injured, is being treated at the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) at Batticaloa Teaching Hospital.

A body with gunshot wounds was recovered last week in Poaratheevu area in Batticaloa district.

Kannangkudaa is located 5 km west of Batticaloa town.
