Armed group sets fire to shops in Vaahzhaicheanai

An unidentified armed group set fire to two shops and two store rooms in Thiyaavedduvaan area in Vaahzaicheanai police division in Batticaoa district Thursday night, Vaahzaicheanai police said. The four buildings were completely destroyed.

The owners of the burnt down properties, who are residents of Vaazhaicheani, open them daily around 8:00 a.m and return home around 6:00 p.m. The fire was set after the owners had gone home in the evening.

The police are conducting investigation into the arson.

Many Muslim farmers living in Oaddamaavadi and Vaazhaicheanai work in fields in Thiyaavedduvaan area.

Vaazhaicheanai is located 32 km north of Batticaloa town.
