Access to books is essential to reading development. Yet 61 percent of low-income families in the U.S. have no books for children in their homes. Over 80 percent of childcare centers serving low-income children lack age-appropriate books and other print materials. Worldwide, there are more than 770 million illiterate adults in the world, two-thirds of whom are women and girls. Education is a lifelong gift that empowers people to ultimately improve socioeconomic conditions for their families, communities, countries, and future generations.
