The Adsense Check for $132,994.97

About once every other day I get a question about the AdSense Check in my Gallery. I originally posted the check in this thread. Its most visited page on shoemoney.com (behind the main page course) with 1-2k unique visits per day.

So just going through the 120 emails or so in the last year on the subject I will answer questions-

  • 1) What site was it for? What does the site do?

The site is nextpimp. The name was kind of a joke at first… next-pimp like pimp out your nextel phone. It started as a wallpaper site for nextel phones which grew into ringtones and other stuff. All content is 100% user generated.

  • 2) How much of the check was profit?

At the time my expenses were 1 server @ 299$ per month for hosting. I would say atleast 130k was profit.

  • 3) How much of the traffic was pay per click?

None of it was pay per click. Back then I did not know anything at all about pay per click.

  • 4) Where did all your traffic come from?

About 70% of the traffic was direct 15% from search engines and 15% from referrals.

  • 5) How much traffic did the site get to get that much money?

    About 75k uniq per day.

  • 6) Why did you get a paper check and not wire?

Back then Google did not do wire transfers for amounts of $10,000.00

  • 7) Do you think its possible to still earn that kind of revenue? (most often asked question)

    Yes.

  • Can you show the full month report from AdSense for that month?

    Sure.

and here is the full month report: (I have permission from Google to display this in my blog and in my presentations. Please check with Google before you disclose any of your reporting)

A Big Set Of Tits - Perry Marshall Guerilla Marketing

I was getting caught up with Joel Comm’s Next Internet Millionaire. The guest guru today was Perry Marshall. Perry was talking about guerilla marketing and broke down the various techniques companies use.

One of his examples was Cosmo magazine and how they put more time and thought into the cover of their magazine then any other part. He showed the final 3 people and asked them what they thought:

He told the users not to mince words but to say what stood out. Contestant Jaime Luchuck started to blurt out her boobs and Perry jumped in and said “A BIG SET OF TITS”. He then went on to explain how they do this because you cant possibly pass by this magazine without stopping and looking at those boobs.

I don’t really know Perry Marshall very well but I thought this was one of the most interesting gurus so far on the show. I really like when people break down marketing and keep it real.

The task in this episode was to give away movie tickets to a free showing of “Over The Hedge” which was showing at the county fair. I think this was a great episode and the contestants came up with some great ideas.

In the end someone is eliminated and its down to the final 2 people. I dont want to spoil it for you go watch it now

Have a business partner? If not, go and get one!

When it comes to money you probably want the biggest piece of the pie if not the whole pie. There is nothing wrong with it and I would even go as far as saying that if your first instinct isn’t to obtain the full pie then there is something wrong.

However, because of this attitude it seems that many people are running their businesses solo these days. It could end up working out for you but here are some reasons why you may want to consider finding a business partner:

1. Being solo all the time can get depressing, especially when you are starting out. Having a business partner will allow you to motivate each other and hopefully keep the business moving forward at a rapid pace.

2. You are not a jack-of-all-trades, so you need to find someone who can fill in where you lack. Just look at Shoemoney and Dillsmack. Shoe is a great marketer and Dillsmack is a great programmer. Because they both specialize in what they do best, they are able to crank out successful products like AuctionAds,

3. Networking is one of the things that is necessary for most businesses to be successful. Even if you are extremely talented, knowing other people that can help you is essential. The great thing about bringing in a business partner is that they may have a new network that you can tap into to grow your business.

4. What you think is a killer idea may not be a smart idea. If you are running a business solo, you are more likely to do stupid things since you don’t always have somebody you trust and believe to run things by. With a business partner you can both bounce ideas off of each other and figure out what is really worth pursuing.

5. Timing is essential when it comes to success. A good way to get things out faster is to add employees, but when you are starting out this can be expensive. For this reason it is wise to add a business partner so that you can get things out faster.

Hopefully this helps convince you that you need a business partner. If you have a business partner, care to share how you have found it valuable or invaluable?

Why Google Owns The World & The Google PC For Under $200

When Google first went IPO I remember calling up my father-in-law and telling him I wanted to buy $250,000.00 worth of stock. He thought i was crazy… really crazy… He went on to explain to me how stocks worked and how overrated GOOG was even at its opening price of $100.01.

Well now its years later and I still have that stock and its up over $700 per share. I am holding tight. I still don’t know anything about stocks but one thing I do know

Google Gets It.

They learned by watching Microsoft just how far you can push before you are broken up by the government. Google knows where its bread is buttered… Its all about putting as many ads in front of people as possible.

Where Google is smart is they never actually own any of the products that make them the most money. For instance Firefox. Google makes a philanthropic donation to Mozilla for 200+ million dollars. Googles “donation” to Mozilla actually accounts for 80-90% of THE TOTAL AMOUNT OF MOZILLA’S funding (depending on what report you read).

So what does Google get for this philanthropic gesture? Well nothing “officially”. I have made the claim that the reason Google is the default search engine on Firefox is because Google is funding them so much but Firefox developers commented on my post saying they only use Google because “its what the users want”. I am sure they would switch to Yahoo “if the users wanted it”. Regardless of Yahoo’s zero donation to Mozilla compared to Googles 200m+… ya right

So a while back when people said Google was coming out with the Google Computer I was like ya WHATEVER Google will never have their own branded PC. It does not make sense for Google to be in the hardware business. Remember where there bread is buttered? Ya from Advertising… not from making gadgets.

What would make sense and be Google’s style? Well making all the applications web based where people would be required to have a Google Account to use but keep them free. Basically make a office suite and a email program but throw ads at people instead of charging them for use.

Well now ladies and gents I present the unofficial Google PC at Walmart for only $200 It comes equiped with the G-OS with full integration for Google’s web based applications. It also is fully integrated with Google maps and Google411.

So now there is buzz about the Google telephone. IMO Google will not release the telephone. Its just not there style. BUT they might fund the operating system on the phone and build all the applications on the phone in order to control all the mobile advertising. Because after all Google is… A advertising company.

Stopping People From Bidding On Your Trademark - At Least On Google Adwords

Sometime last year I got our attorneys working on filing to trademark several things that we hold. Every thing from ShoeMoney to clickshield to nextpimp and other items.

On September 25 2007 we received notice from the United States Patent and Trademark office that our trademark for SHOEMONEY had been approved:

Now we could always legally have gone after people who infringed on our trademark but one thing that always bugged me was the PPC Trademark bidding. Everytime I did a search for ShoeMoney all these jerk off companies would come up that were trying to make a buck off of my brand and that bugged me. (I am such a hypocrite at the same time as I do a lot of trademark bidding on the other end).

So now that we got our shiney new registered trademark I thought I would give it a test run and file with Google. I filled out this form and today I received this from the Google Adwords Team. (still waiting to hear from Microsoft and Yahoo but really do they matter? )

Its cool when you fill out the Google Adwords form for your trademark because you can give it Google Adwords Account ID’s that you give permission to use your trademark (like mine).

Stop worrying about PageRank and start diversifying your traffic!

In the last week or so it seems that everyone is talking about the Google PageRank update. The thing is, people need to stop worrying about their PageRank and start concentrating on their traffic. Nine out of the ten people I asked who’s PageRank decreased said that they did not see much, if any, change in their Google traffic.

At the end of the day, does it really matter if your PageRank decreases and your search traffic stays the same (other than the purpose of selling links)? What you need to do is start diversifying your traffic so that you aren’t as reliant on Google. Google may convert better but it would be a terrible mistake to let your businesses faith rest solely on Google alone.

So, now that you don’t care about PageRank or hopefully a little less, here are some things you should think about doing:

    1. Look at the other search engines out there. Yahoo and MSN may not drive as much traffic but something is better than nothing. If you think you are getting no traffic from Yahoo or MSN, it is probably because your rankings aren’t as high on those engines.

    2. Start leveraging the social web. Sites like Digg, Del.icio.us, MySpace, and FaceBook are just few of the social sites you should consider leveraging. The traffic may not be as valuable but with enough quantity it will be worth something. Three of my clients get more than 100,000,000 pageviews from their Facebook application every month and if these non-marketers can do it, then you as a marketer can as well.

    3. Build partnerships with other websites on the web because this is a great way to expand your traffic as well as business. This is easier said then done but if you spend enough time on it then something will happen in your favor.

Anyone have any other recommendations when it comes to diversifying your traffic?

    Are Yuwie Serious?

A couple weeks ago, a friend of mine asked me if I knew anything about Yuwie. He signed up for the site and actually described it to me as “a social networking site crossed with a pyramid scheme.”

Apparently, the gist of the site is that they want you to refer as many people to sign up as possible. The more people that sign up, the more page views the site receives, and the more page views there are, the more banner impressions are delivered. Yuwie also shares the revenue they receive from ads, paying you ten deep for referrals (if you refer ten friends, you get paid for those ten referrals plus the referrals those people make, hence the “pyramid” structure).

Yuwie is currently reporting 214,094 total members, who are all, I bet, lazy asses. From looking at the site (it looks like a hastily put together piece of crap), I doubt people are signing up for “social networking” purposes. I wrote earlier how I’m not too fond of people trying to make a quick buck online without working hard, which is why I’m rolling my eyes at Yuwie. I haven’t tried the site out though, so if any of you have tried it out and have anything glowing to say about it, I’m all ears.

Why do people roll their eyes at traditional pyramid schemes, yet come across one on the Internet and suddenly think it’s a great Internet marketing strategy? I just don’t understand the mysterious allure of the Internet, how people think it’s where you go to get loads of money for virtually no work.

Anyway, like I said, has anyone tried out Yuwie? If so, what do you think?

    Fun Numbers

8,500+ - Views on YouTube in the first TWO DAYS for PamCakes SEM recap video Considering it was posted early Saturday morning and the weekend is about 60% less traffic on my blog then during the week I think she might want to consider a future in video blogging on SEM ;).

34,100 - Is the number of dumb asses who just told google they are selling paid links (its so funny people running around wondering what magic algorithm Google is using to figure out who is selling paid links…..)

Course a bunch of those are doups but an interesting query…

13,600 blogs mention pagerank in the last 7 days

7 is the Google Pagerank that copy blogger Brian Clark ended up with after the b5 blog network brass called up Google and raised some hell.
