this whole discussion of newness seems to me to be like a muscle memory response that is triggers including the avant garde, historical and commercial imperatives that you mention in this piece. its programed into our limbs through through an osmotic societal leeching and we periodically trigger our reflex responses to the discourse via synonyms and related terms like "originality", "agency" and "innovation".

there are so many vested interests tied up in this myth-making discourse that it gets worn out as a useful critical tool for practicing artists (here i'm talking about sides of the newness discussion). i think you refer in some way to the paradox of this in driving the creation of a "new" discourse but perhaps this "new discourse" is better thought of as a discourse of variation at least until that discourse infiltrates our muscle memory and becomes a reflex response.
